If you’re a college student, here’s important news to ponder: The House of Representatives this past Friday morning passed the $50 billion budget reconciliation bill, which passed by an ever-so-slight margin of 217-215.Visit to Apply Today

This is important news for students and families throughout the country, as $14.3 billion of that money is geared toward cuts in federal student loan programs. This particular news seems poised to negatively impact the lives of students throughout the country for a long time.

The student loan cuts appear to be the largest cuts to any federal program, including Medicaid and food stamps.

Among the federal student loan program cuts are a student loan tax increase, an increase in consolidation loan interest rates, and a reduction in subsidies paid to lenders.

Although the bill passed the House in addition to the passage of an earlier Senate reconciliation bill of cuts to federal programs, both houses still must come together for a meeting of the minds to pass a final reconciliation bill. This most likely will occur sometime in December.

Students and their families still can have a say in the matter. In what would appear to be a daunting task, students still are making their voices heard through the Stop the Raid on Student Aid campaign that began back in August. The campaign was put together by the state PIRGs and the United States Student Association in an effort to get concerned students and other citizens to contact their representatives regarding the attack on federal student loan programs.
